Bell Point Marina: A Florida Time Capsule

Tucked beside Florida farmland, Bell Point Marina is one of the state’s last original marinas. Richie, its third-generation owner, works alongside his son to preserve a place shaped by a century of family history. Initially guarded because of ongoing efforts by the state to claim the land, he gradually opened up as we walked the docks—sharing stories of the old house, the bell-shaped pool, and a New England steamboat that, as he put it, would not be complete without “a damn tea kettle.” Richie is also a remarkable photographer, though he keeps his images of Florida almost entirely to himself. When I asked why, he simply said, “I just don’t feel the need to share my art.”

Richie looks straight into the camera for a portrait.
